Always one for trying new things, I am open to exploring different ways to improve my physical health through regular exercise. I recognize the benefits of mixing in other modes of fitness for optimal strengthening and conditioning. Plus, working out can get boring if you are doing the same thing week after week, not to mention your muscles will eventually plateau and you will decrease the results you see (often discouraging if you are trying to achieve a particular goal). For me, I found an awesome community at Strive Life Athletics, a group-based high intensity interval-style workout. Their motto “we are life athletics” rings true; anyone can train like an athlete whether you play sports or not.
Founders Martin and Ryan are lifelong athletes and understand the inner-workings of our bodies and muscles to create a sequence of exercises that target various complimentary muscle groups for full body conditioning. While their workouts may seem intimidating initially, they are great with offering options for beginners so that they don’t risk energy or fatigue too early on.
Be prepared to sweat! The hour-long workouts are intense, but each exercise only lasts between 20-40 seconds for each set, before taking a quick break and starting over again. It keeps your heart rate up to kick your metabolism into high gear, ensuring you are burning calories long after the workout ends. I find this style of exercise is a great addition to your workout routine a few times a month to prevent muscle memory.
The playlist is always bumping, the energy is always high and you feel completely accomplished and energized after completing the class. It is seriously one of the most satisfactory workouts I do. I have also learned to integrate certain exercises into my own routines. Also, it has taught me that shorter, more intense workouts yield greater results than long and drawn-out gym sessions. This is great news for those of you, like me, who are busy and find excuses such as “no time” to workout, when you really only need 30-45 minutes for get that sweat on!
