I always thought bistro fare was synonymous with heavy, rich and gluten-y foods! At East Thirty-Six, the modern bistro cuisine is far more refined and allergy conscious. Located in Old Toronto, near St. Lawrence Market, this cozy restaurant is the perfect date night spot (trust me, I’ve been here on a couple in the past) or to gather with friends (I have brought my parents here before). It’s moody interior is a great spot to seek shelter when those nights get colder over the fall/winter season. Stay warm with their signature cocktails or pick something from their extensive wine list.
The best way to describe the food at East Thirty-Six would be comforting. But aside from that, they take their kitchen practices seriously and are very accommodating (Chef Sung is really fabulous). But not like mac and cheese comforting, think braised short rib and smoked mashed potato. Or roasted cauliflower with brown butter and hazelnuts.
If you’re looking for something a little lighter, the grilled squid is perfect. The seafood is very fresh and they pair it with a pesto for a nice herbacious balance.
No date night is complete without a little indulgence and the chocolate delice is worth every last bite. Salty, sweet, and decadent!
