Trend forecast everywhere are predicting that East African cuisine is going to go mainstream for 2018. So I present you the best gluten-free Ethiopian in Toronto. Truth be told, a few years ago I would not have thought twice about this. However, after my first experience with Ethiopian food, I was shocked more people aren’t raving about it. Not only is the food seriously pretty, but it is nearly 100% gluten-free. Their traditional sourdough-style flatbread, injera, is spongey, sour and made with teff flour, a gluten-free grain. Most of the restaurants that have made this list are shipping in a gluten-free version direct from Ethiopia, as the temperatures in Canada don’t allow for the proper process to succeed, thus many manufactured here have wheat flour in the ingredients. This bread is used to pick up your food with, the original finger foods! Anyway, I digress- the list is as follows:
Not only is the food stellar, but Enat, the owner is just about the sweetest. You’re lucky if you catch her perform the traditional coffee ceremony, although she would surely do it if you asked. The menu is incredibly accommodating and GF injera is available upon request!
This is the OG of Ethiopian restaurants in Toronto. The first to make it’s mark in Little Ethiopia on the Danforth many moons ago. You can expect vibrant platters of vegetarian and meat dishes, most gluten-free. GF injera is available upon request.
Located on Queen West, Nunu offers a more fine-dining Ethiopian experience, although eating with your hands is still the standard! Beautiful platters of vegan, vegetarian and carnivorous curries, salads and dishes await. GF Injera is also available upon request.
4. Pero Lounge
I have only ordered Pero from Foodora and it is a great takeout meal! Located in Bloorcourt, you can get the goods delivered to your doorstep. I am always amazed how flavourful each dish is! GF injera is available!
Ok, so I haven’t actually ever been to Nazareth, but it is a fan-favourite. It has rumoured to have closed so perhaps someone can confirm this for me. But nonetheless it is touted as amazing. It would be a share to have closed without having tried it first!
